Do you have an entire accessories closet to move? Before you box, bin, or bag your shoes, handbag, or silk scarf collections, take a look at what you need to know about moving these types of fashion accessories.

How Should You Move Shoes?

While your old, stinky sneakers can go into a bin or box for the move, expensive, delicate, or designer dress shoes and heels may require extra care. To safely move fragile shoes:

  • Use the original packaging . Did you save the box the shoes originally came in? Use this box to start the packing process. While you may need to add padding or stuffing to the shoes or box itself, this cardboard container is the first step towards protection.
  • Stuff the shoes . Help your shoes to keep their shape during the move and after you get to your new home. Use plain white acid-free paper or tissue or stuff the shoes with rolled socks.
  • Add stuffing . Shoes aren't the only part of this package that requires stuffing. Stuff the interior of the box with acid-free paper or tissue too.

Some designer or dress shoes may come in their own felt or other fabric bag. If your shoes came with a bag, use this item. Place the bagged shoes inside the box and fill the interior to prevent slippage. Instead of moving individual boxes, careful stack the containers inside a plastic bin. Instead of stacking the boxes, avoid pressure-related damage and pack one row of shoes in each bin.

How Should You Move Handbags?

Your pricey purses and favorite handbags also require special attention before, during, and after your move. If you have a bounty of bags to move:

  • Separate the bags into categories . Start with a sorting session. Divide the bags into categories such as dress and casual, create color-coded groups, or separate purses by material (such as leather or lighter fabric).
  • Remove items from the interior . A leftover lipstick, bottle of nail polish, or pieces of candy can make a mess in your purse mid-move. Remove everything from your purse before your pack.
  • Stuff some handbags . If the bag should keep its shape, stuff the interior with acid-free plain paper, tissue, or clean, rolled socks.
  • Cover the purse . Use a breathable dust bag to cover your leather or delicate purse. You can also wrap the bag in a lint-free cloth.

Like shoes, place handbags into the original packaging when possible. Put the boxed or wrapped purses into a container (such as a bin) with cardboard dividers. Never stack boxes of bags or purses on top of each other. This can bend, crush, or damage delicate handbags.

How Should You Move Scarves?

Fold or roll knit winter scarves and pack these items in plastic bins or canvas totes. Even though these casual items are easy to move, silk or other fragile fabric scarves need extra attention. Pack these items with care and:

  • Fold the scarves . Fold each scarf individually. If possible, fold the scarf in the same way it was when you originally bought the item.
  • Use tissue paper . Again, like with shoes and bags, choose an acid-free white paper or tissue. Wrap the tissue delicately around the scarf to protect it during the move.
  • Use a box . Place the wrapped scarf into a long, flat box. Tape the box together to prevent it from opening mid-move.

After the scarves are packed in individual boxes, place the accessories into a plastic bin or another similar container. Secure the bin with a tight-fitting lid or tape the top of the container closed completely.
